BUILDING A WORLD OF FUN: The History of LEGOÂ®

Founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christianson in Denmark, The LEGO Group began a tradition of play that has touched the lives of millions of children across the world. Children in more than 130 countries use their imagination and creativity to build everything from castles to robots with these well-loved construction toys. And LEGOs aren’t just for toddlers and school children. They are also LEGO products for teenagers, as well as adults who are young at heart and still enjoy the fun of building whatever their imagination designs.

The brand name LEGO is an abbreviation for two Danish words, “leg godt.” Translated, the phrase means “play well.” However, while LEGOs are great fun for kids who enjoy playtime, the toys are also quite educational. In fact, LEGOs are often used in the classroom. The toys are stimulating, engaging and even challenging, and great tools for developing motor and problems solving skills. Children become engineers and architects as they build bridges and buildings, and the sense of accomplishment they feel once they complete their project is priceless. For this reason, parents and educators are also huge fans of the LEGO brand.

The LEGO Group first entered the market by manufacturing wooden toys. In 1947, the company purchased its first plastic injection-moulding machine and by 1949 was producing approximately 200 different types of plastic and wooden models. One of the models was the Automatic Binding Bricks, which is a forerunner of the LEGO bricks children all over the world play with today.

The 1950s was a groundbreaking decade for the company. In 1953, the Automatic Binding Bricks were renamed “LEGO Mursten” or LEGO bricks, and in 1954 the name was trademarked. Just four years later the LEGO brick model that we know and love today was launched. The following year the company launched the “LEGO System of Play” which would prove to be a revolutionary concept. The company began exporting its product to countries outside of Denmark and product development began to soar.

A number of popular LEGO toys emerged in the following years including LEGO model car and the LEGO train. By 1966 the company’s product range was comprised of 57 sets and 25 vehicles, and 706 million LEGO pieces were produced in that year alone! In 1967 the LEGO DUPLO was launched. Initially a big brick designed for children with small hands, the LEGO DUPLO became an ideal model for children aged 2-6 years and was noted as a safe toy that couldn’t be swallowed.

In 1968, LEGOLAND opened and attracted 625,000 visitors during its first season, which was a testimony to the success of the company and the brand. For the next several decades the company would continue to live up to the tradition of innovation and excellence that it had established. The company would develop more groundbreaking products, expand to countries all over the world, and add new departments including the Educational Products Department, which would later be called “LEGO Dacta.”

The LEGO Group has received a number of awards and honors over the course of the company’s history. In 1986 the company was granted the title of “Purveyor to Her Majesty the Queen” on the birthday of the H.M. Queen Margrethe of Denmark. The company has also received the honor of “Toy of the Century” twice by Fortune Magazine and by the British Association of Toy Retailers. And just this year, the third generation of the LEGO family, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the LEGO brick.

Today, the LEGO Group is still headquartered in Denmark and now produces 2,400 different types of LEGO brick shapes. The company’s products have inspired other colorful, plastic construction toys such as Bristle Blocks, Krinkles and the popular Stickle Bricks, created by U.K. based toy maker Denys Fisher. The LEGO Group is the fifth largest toy manufacturer in the world based on sales and continues to be recognized as a leading innovator in the industry.

There’s nothing more frightening for new parents than the thought that their child may be sick. While most parents do well keeping their child away from common cold and flu germs, not everyone takes into account the affect household allergens may have on a newborn. Common respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, coughing and difficulty breathing are often examples of allergic rhinitis, or respiratory allergies, and are caused by a simple factor in the child’s environment. Dust mites, pet dander, mold, pollen –young children can develop allergies to a number of everyday things. Luckily, removing allergens and thus preventing or reducing allergic reactions can be a very easy process. The most important part of the process, though, is knowing what you’re up against.

It is important to understand what respiratory allergens are if you expect to protect your child from them. An allergy is an immune reaction to an irritable substance in the child’s environment. The child’s body views these irritants as dangerous and releases chemicals, such as histamines, that cause uncomfortable and potentially harmful symptoms. While a child may eventually develop immunity to these irritants, untreated or ignored allergic symptoms can lead to such respiratory problems as asthma and emphysema.

The most common allergens are dust mites, animal dander and molds. Dust mites are microscopic organisms that live in carpets and fabrics and feed on dead flakes of human and animal skin. Children can develop respiratory allergies from inhaling accumulated mites in areas that aren’t cleaned properly or regularly. Bedding, clothing and comforters should be washed in hot water at least once a week. For additional protection, cribs and beds should be covered with an impermeable mattress encasement. These covers act as a barrier between your baby and allergy-causing dust mites. It is also important to vacuum and dust weekly; a vacuum cleaner with a high efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) filter helps trap particles normal dusting and vacuuming can miss. It is also important to clean or replace heating ducts, furnace and air conditioning filters whenever they’re in use.

Stuffed animals and plush toys can also be a haven for dust mites. Make sure you wash your child’s favorite plush toys as often as you would his or her bedding and clothing.

Pet dander is another common household allergen. Unfortunately, the only sure-fire way to protect your child from dander is to give the animal away. This can often be a very difficult and heartbreaking decision, but if your child’s allergic reaction is severe it may be the only option. If your child has only a mild allergy you might consider simply keeping the animal well-groomed, shampooed, off furniture and out of the child’s room.

Mold is a versatile and particularly irksome allergen. Molds can grow in closets, attics, cellars, planters, refrigerators, showers, garbage cans, mattresses, carpets –just about any warm, moist area in the house. Mold allergies are caused by the spores the mold uses to reproduce. These spores can cause significant health problems. The best way to prevent mold growth is to keep the air in troublesome areas of your home dry. A dehumidifier can help keep air dry in the winter, while a good air conditioner can achieve the same effect in the summer. Keeping high-risk areas clean is also important—use mold-inhibiting disinfectants such as bleach or tea tree oil and water.

Of course, any respiratory symptoms should be checked by your child’s physician. Most doctors won’t prescribe allergy medication to newborns, especially children younger than six months, but they may have treatment options that better fit your child’s specific allergy problem.

It’s fairly easy to determine whether your child is going to have a tendency to be allergic. Allergic tendencies are inherited, though specific allergies are not. If either you or your mate is allergic to cats, for instance, your child will have a fifty percent chance of developing some sort of allergy as well, though not necessarily to cats. Allergies also take a while to develop. Newborns may not show symptoms of allergic reactions for a few months; then, suddenly, the child’s exposure level to mites, mold or dander will reach its threshold and the child will start to develop symptoms.

Newborn allergies can be a scary experience for parents, especially if you are unprepared for them. The best way to help treat allergies is to prevent them before your child is even home from the hospital. Thoroughly clean and disinfect any areas the newborn will occupy, invest in proper ventilation and vacuum symptoms, and keep clothes and bedding washed regularly and protected with impermeable covers. Taking care of a newborn can bring about a number of unforeseen obstacles, but with proper preparation, common household allergens don’t need to be one of them.

Though not really a "tough" vehicle, a minivan is the perfect family vehicle for its sheer practicality and the comfort it offers.

If you’re buying clothes:

a) Pay attention to how they come off. There will inevitably be many, many diaper changes. The outfit is a lot more likely to get good mileage if the nervous new parents don’t have to go wriggle a fragile little head in and out of cute clothes ten times a day. Robes, gowns, kimonos, and front snap tees are great. Practical doesn’t have to mean boring – there are a lot of stylish options out there!

b) Be mindful of the weather. Don’t get summery clothes in the 0-3 month size if the baby is born in the dead of winter. Chances are, as cute as they may be, the baby will outgrow them long before he or she gets a chance to wear them. If it’s rainy, rain gear will be very much appreciated to protect the delicate newborn.

c) Size matters. Newborn clothes only fit for a short time unless the baby is particularly small or a preemie. So, don’t buy too many of the wee sizes. Baby showers often result in too many little clothes, and by the time the baby is six months old, the parents are rushing to buy new ones. A nice gift may be a range of sizes for the baby’s first year.

a) A keepsake. The baby won’t be able to see what you got for quite some time, and chances are that by then, it will have been passed on to someone else. So, get something special for the baby that he or she can uncover years later, and maybe even pass on to their children some day. 3. Add incredible depth to your family history.

Look at all of the different things you can actually save. You could create a digital journal, copy blog posts into Word documents and save them, scan in invitations from weddings & parties, save emails and web links – you can save them all and put them into your special occasions folder. You can actually take clippings off websites, videos from YouTube – there are so many things now that you can actually save that will add an incredible depth to your family history. It’s not just photos and videos anymore. I highly recommend at the very least creating special occasion journal entries that add deeper information and specific details of your special times e.g. place names, people’s names, contact details, interesting occurrences and much more. These should correspond directly with all your other memories all in one central program.

4. Keep it safe.

Have a simple system to back up all of your memories. Make sure it’s simple so that you will do it often. You also need to have an automated system. That means that you can’t forget to back up, as the automated system will back up for you regardless of how busy you are.

If you follow these four steps, you and your future generations will rejoice in the amazing outcome and wonderful opportunity to watch your life unfold. Your children and grandchildren – future loved ones – won’t have any doubt of what you did, when you did it, who you did it with and how great it was. Make sure that you have these four steps in place, and you will create a wonderful family history.

Sometimes, on a deeper level, children re-enact a time and place where that didn’t quite work out as they wanted it to. When they replay it in pretending, they can feel better about what went on because in some way, they have taken more control of the situation in their own minds. There are many ways that pretending and role-playing is good for your child. All you need to do is have some basic items around to help the game go well.

Keep some old towels or sheets around so that the child can pretend to go camping or go hiking in a cave. Throwing a sheet over some chairs makes a great cave or tent. Keep some empty paper towel roles handy for emergency swords or microphones. A scarf or towel pinned to the shoulders of a favorite shirt makes a great cape for the super hero. Some old necklaces, ribbons, and pins are great dress up helpers for little girls and I can still remember running around in one my dad’s ties and his shoes that we were way to big for me. Make sure that your “stuff” is less important than your child and, within reason, let them use some of your household and personal items for their pretend games.

What is even more fun for your child is when you play pretend as well. When you welcome you child’s teddy bear, aka the new super hero or the new Preschool teacher, at the dinner table, you’ve entered into his or her game and it becomes more exciting because you are willing to play.

Your Part

As we’ve already mentioned, your part may be to keep some supplies on hand and to participate when called upon. However, sometimes as the parent, you may need to give a little boost to the idea by asking them what they would like to pretend about. There are lots of choices:

Being a School teacher

Being a pirate

Being a favorite super hero

Being a great warrior

Having a space ship

Being a doctor or nurse

Being a fire truck driver

Being a movie star

There may even be special times when you want to dress all of your children in matching clothing or, if you're heading to a family reunion or a crowded fair or amusement park, you may even want your entire family (including mom and dad) to dress alike in matching family clothes so that you can all easily pick each other out in a crowd and ensure that no one gets lost in the shuffle.

What are the possibilities for putting together matching brother and sister clothing for children ? One traditional option is simply to buy multiples of a particular item of children's clothing. For example, you may dress three adorable little girls alike in the same little dress, all in the same color or each in a different color.

A variation on this theme is to dress your boy and girl in variations on a theme. For instance, each child can wear a different outfit, but one which includes the same fabric in part. A little girl might wear an outfit that includes a plaid skirt while her little brother wears a suit that includes a vest in a matching or complimentary plaid material.

At family events they can add both sweetness and humor to the festivities by wearing coordinated tops on the subject of family love, from "I Love Mommy" to "I Love Daddy" to "I Love My Big Brother" to "I Love Grandpa," or everyone from babies to great grandmas can simply dress in "I Love My Family" T-shirts. Your family might even opt for a set of T-shirts or family sweatshirts that are personalized just for you, bearing the names of family members or carrying some saying or phrase that has special meaning for your family. Such clothing items are readily available on the web.

Lastly, if your children don't like to dress alike but there are certain special occasions when you'd really like them to present a united front and create the appearance of a matched set, you could try just using minor items of children's clothing or accessories that match in style or color or both. For this situation colorful sashes, hair ribbons, scarves or hats might fit the bill perfectly.

Just for fun your children might also enjoy collecting other types of objects such as mugs, throw pillows or mouse pads, each unique yet part of a thematically linked set. Mugs, for example, each of which is decorated with a picture from a different fairy tale, can allow each child in the house to feel special and unique. "The Cinderella mug is mine and the Jack and the Beanstalk mug is yours." Do you have enough financial security? Will you always be here for him or her? This is perfectly normal and part of the transition to becoming a dad.

Will I still love my wife now that she's a mom?

Your wife may be a few pounds heavier now. Sex might not be something she's interested in anymore, at least for now. She might even strangely remind you of your own mother. For some men, their feelings about their spouse intensify during pregnancy, but for others, it's a shock. It reminds them they are no longer young or free to do as they choose, and that can itself be very frightening. There is no good answer here except that you have to come to terms with your new role as a partner and provider.

Having a baby, in the best of situations, is a decision you make because you're ready for the major changes it entails. If you're having a baby in less than perfect circumstances (it's unexpected), this doesn't change your responsibility once you've decided to have the baby together.

Most couples find that after kids they have to reestablish the intimacy they had before the baby. Many do this through planned "date nights" or eventually, even weekends away. You'll find that you will have to schedule time to be together to keep a real relationship going.

Why doesn't the baby like me?

First of all, little babies don't give a lot of feedback to anything, so don't sweat it. Pretty soon, though, you'll be getting a nod and a smile. You'll have to keep your expectations low however. The first few years are really about mommy. But don’t worry, if you're there early on, you'll have a very strong relationship to build from when this time changes.

Are we becoming our parents?

Join the club – very soon, you'll find yourself an hour into a discussion about strollers, diapers, feedings, and bottles and wonder to yourself what happened. Didn't you agree with your wife that you would never become one of "those people"? It's hard to avoid these topics since the baby and his needs are going to be running your life for at least the next three to four years.

Does it have to be so complicated?

It's usually the dad who wonders why mom has to have everything on a list, everything in its place, and everything on a schedule. That's why dads get a lot of teasing for arriving at the playground without extra formula or diapers. With a little practice, though, dads get the hang of what's really important. It doesn't need to be complicated but you do have to prepare for feedings and diapering or you're in big trouble. Keep those two things always in mind and most of the rest will usually follow.

Hey Parents: Handle Yourself First

This may seem strange. Backwards even. You don't need help handling yourself. It's your kids that you need to know how to handle right?

How do I reward them properly when they do something good to reinforce the behavior? Or how do I punish them effectively when they do something wrong to stop it from happening again?

All of that is important, but the most important thing you need to do is to learn how to handle yourself. You are the leader of the family and as you go, your children go. So let me suggest using these "4 Steps to Handling Yourself in Parenting Situations".

Step 1: Identify Immediately

Your child made all A's, they washed the dishes or cleaned their room.

-or-

They got a D in Algebra, broke their Game boy, or threw a party while you were out of town.

Whatever it is - identify the action immediately to your child. Don't put it off. The longer you wait to acknowledge an action the less effect it has and the less likely you are to actually do anything about it. And this includes stopping a bad behavior or increasing the likelihood that a good behavior will occur again.

Step 2: Be Specific

"Good job honey" doesn't usually cut it. Instead try something like: "Mark, I am so happy for you getting a 94 on your English test. You studied so hard for that and you deserved it."

-or-

"GO TO YOUR ROOM YOU ARE GROUNDED" may not work so good either.

Be more specific about the action: "Kelly, I am very disappointed that you lied to us about that party you went to. You know you aren't allowed to go somewhere with no parental supervision."

There are two reasons for being specific about a behavior:

#1: Sometimes children may not know what they did right or wrong. You need to tell them EXACTLY what they did because, as you know, their interpretations are often times different from yours.

#2: The more specific you are about the action, the more meaningful it will be to your child. Our kids don't always listen to everything we say anyway. When we want to make an impact - or get a point across - let's be specific and clear about what we are saying.

Step 3: Respond Memorably

If your child does something good, make sure you reward them with something special - something they will remember.

This does NOT mean always giving them a financial or material reward like a new video game. These are fine but should be used sparingly. Instead, give them something special. You may not be aware of this but some love and affection from a parent can be FAR more significant to your child than any material thing.

A hug, nice words or a compliment (especially in public) could all do the trick.

$5 for every A on their report card? No not so much. Sure it may seem like something they would want. Who doesn't want money right? But after they spend it later that day they will have already forgotten about it and will be asking for more.

And what about when your child messes up?

Your reaction needs to be uncomfortable. This does NOT mean painful. There is a difference.

Sending them to their room with a TV, phone and Xbox is NOT uncomfortable. Just yelling at them, but not doing anything about their action is NOT uncomfortable - it may be loud for a few minutes, but that's easy to get through.

Step 4: Be Consistent

This is the most important step. You should always be consistent in everything you do as a parent and a person. This doesn't mean you have to respond the same way every time - just make sure you respond each time something happens with a similar degree of intensity.

People, especially children, need constant positive reinforcement. When your child brings home their Kindergarten report card with all A's you compliment and reward them. But does that stop when they hit 5th grade? Or 10th grade? It better not. Otherwise those A's will quickly turn into C's.

And what about on the negative side of things? Your son likes to hit people - his friends, siblings and you. When he does it, you acknowledge that it's wrong immediately, you're specific that he should not hit people and you make him go to time-out for 5 minutes.

Once that is over he stops hitting...for a little while. The next time he starts hitting again you respond the same way, but what about the 10th time? You have bruises all over your arms and legs, are exhausted from wrestling with him and just want a break. So what do you do? You respond differently. You yell, threaten or even ignore him.

When do you think he will stop hitting? Never - of course. Why? Not because you didn't acknowledge the problem quick enough - you did. Not because you weren't specific about what he was doing wrong - you were. And not because the response wasn't memorable - it probably was. It's because you weren't consistent enough to stop the behavior.

So as you can see, being consistent is essential for all behaviors - good or bad. And you may be surprised at how well a lot of your "parenting tools" already work if you just stick with them. So start to handle yourself and then concentrate on your kids.

Patience

Probably the greatest parenting skill is the one that keeps you from screaming or throwing a baby across the room when he has been crying for a few hours straight. The good news is that being a dad puts a lot into perspective and places where you lost your cool before are easier to manage. Never downplay your own anxieties if you feel you can't control your emotions. Everyone has moments where they think they might lose it. If you think you are about to do something dangerous, call for help immediately.

Sense of humor

Keep laughing through all of it and repeating that it's short and will end soon, and you'll be surprised at how quickly diaper changing becomes a mere memory. Parents who are able to laugh when their hands are knuckle deep in a diaper genie are better able to weather the stress of sleepless nights and the drudgery of feeding-wiping-washing-swaddling.

Consistency

Despite how babies seem to rule the house from the moment you bring them home, they actually thrive on consistency in routines. If you feed them and give them naps at the same time every day, they will be more secure and cry less. As they grow older, more routine (brushing teeth, family meals, daily piano practice and so on) gives them structure. Too much choice is hard for littler kids. This puts a big responsibility on parents who need to be present to "nag" about all the things kids need to focus on. There is a big payoff. Older kids appreciate this effort.

Real skills out of a book

Changing a diaper, making formula, installing a car seat – all of these things take real learning to accomplish and do over and over again. The early baby years are all about learning a ton of new information and studying small print to build things for your baby or even feed him the right amount of medicine.

Love and affection

Whether you call it a parenting skill or not, love and affection is the most important thing for your newborn baby. Many studies indicate that physical contact between parent and child is important for development. Dads, because they will engage in down on the floor "rough and tumble play," play an especially important role in developing kids growing social skills. You'll hear many people challenge this idea and suggest that babies need to be "toughened up" by letting them cry themselves to sleep or even go without a bottle to stay on a rigid schedule. This is plain wrong. While some animal babies are able to fend for themselves very quickly after they are born, the human baby is meant to be nurtured and protected for quite some time after birth. For example, human baby brains alone are only half the size they will be just one year after birth. Some say human babies complete gestation period should really be 21 months, combining nine months in the womb and another 12 months after birth. Babies need physical attention as much as possible during this time period, as well as for many years beyond. There is no such thing as loving a child "too much."

Luckily for you, many of these parenting skills come naturally to new dads if you're able to grow with the role of being a dad.

Instead of spending time trying to get the perfect pose, keep a camera nearby so that you are able to take advantages of those spur-of-the-moment, one-of-a-kind photo opportunities.

Other contests’ judges are less focused on the pose of the baby. Those are the contests where the winners are often obviously posed. The best idea is to check the contest’s website to look at the gallery of past winners. That will give you a good idea of what types of photos the judges seem to prefer.

Composition of the photo is of primary importance. The baby is the focus of the contest and should be the only person is the photo. Also, since the judges want to see how adorable your baby is, they really need to be able to see the face. Avoid big hats, sunglasses or profile photos, instead take photos of the baby facing directly into the camera.

The baby should take up most of the space in the photo. In other words use the zoom to close in on the baby’s face and avoid having too much background. A little background can add flair and interest, but too much can be overwhelming. This zooming process can also be accomplished using your computer’s photograph manipulation software.

Is the baby photo contest being held close to or in conjunction with a holiday? If so, consider incorporating the holiday into the photo; pumpkins near Halloween, bunnies near Easter, etc. This can give you the winning edge, especially if you can take a “spontaneous” pose.

If you are unsure of how to take quality photos, check your digital camera booklet to learn how to set your camera to the highest quality settings. Also visit the website of your camera’s manufacturer for photo-taking tips. The worst thing you can do is to submit a grainy photo or one where the baby’s eyes are red.

Following these few guidelines will increase your chances of winning baby photo contests by ensuring that you submit quality photos. It will also take the stress out of the process and make it fun and possibly even rewarding.

Within this interview we spoke to resident TV doctor on THIS MORNING Dr. Chris Steele, one of the questions asked was about high temperatures and what we can do to get their temperatures down.

What is a normal temperature?

Normal temperatures can vary between 36 and 38 degrees. The average is 37. You might find your child’s normal temperature is 36.6. However, a fever of 39 should be looked at by a doctor. A rise in temperature could be the first sign of infection.

What shouldn’t we do?

When a child gets a temperature a mum will close the window, turn the heating on and put a duvet on a child and it’s the worst thing you can do. A child with a fever has to be cooled down. If you do the opposite your child could have a febrile convulsion - this is a fit caused by a fever that’s rising. Now, when a mum sees this for the first time she is terrified. She thinks her child’s got a brain tumour, she thinks her child’s got epilepsy - but it’s the convulsion is caused by not controlling the fever correctly.

What’s classed as a high temperature in a baby?

What’s classed as a normal temperature is 37 degrees. In terms of taking your child’s temperature go away from glass thermometers because they’re potentially dangerous and they may contain mercury. The best thermometers are the ones we use in the babies ear.

How should a fever be treated?

I have a plan for controlling fevers. When babies and children get a high temperature so many mothers do the wrong thing. They close the windows, they turn the heat up, they put a duvet on the child and if you make your child too hot you put them at risk of a febrile convulsion. If you baby has a temperature the thing to do is get that fever down. I’ll take you through my five C’s….

First of all…Cool Room…Open the window, turn the heating off and if possible put a fan on in the room.

The second C is…Cool Sponge…sponge your child’s head, neck and arms with a sponge or a cloth.

The third C…Cool Drinks…give your child plenty of cool, iced drinks. Whatever they fancy.

The next C is…Cool Bedding…just providing one sheet with maybe a blanket, make them loose fitting so the child can kick them off if they’re uncomfortable but no duvets and no electric blankets.

The final C…Calpol…paracetemol helps to bring the temperature down and make the child more comfortable.

Why give kids an allowance?

When do I start?

The best time to start giving an allowance is when you notice your child is able to understand the concept of money. For most that will be around grade one when schools include counting and making change as part of the classroom program.

Six tips for successful allowance:

1. Give an allowance regularly. Kids should be able to count on a steady income so they can be in a better position to learn how to budget.

2. Give them what you can afford. There are many schools of thought on how much allowance to give however, consider examining what you spend on them per month and then decide what part of that you can hand over. Discuss your plans with your child and be clear what you expect them to pay for. That way they can decide if they want to walk to school to save bus fare, buy that blouse or go to the movies.

3. Let them make their own mistakes. Be careful not to over control your child's spending. They'll soon discover that they will have to make choices between the things they want and the things they can afford.

4. Set up some rules. Set up ground rules for their allowance and let them know that some of their money should be set aside for saving (education and/or rainy days), sharing (birthday presents) and spending (choices of their own).

5. Don't give them advances. If your child has run out of money, learn to say no with respect. Allow them to feel the consequences of what it feels like and then help them to focus on what they need to do to resolve their shortfall.

6. Watch for changes in needs. As your child grows her money needs will change. Periodically take a pulse to see if the amount is still appropriate.

It's not easy for kids to understand money or to manage it wisely. However, it's a necessary skill that will take them through life. When parents can be there to mentor them through the ups and downs that will come as they are learning, their children will benefit.

Babies are wonderful!

They will go through many changes in the first 18 months of life, from being totally dependent on their adult parents or care givers to talking and walking on their own. Parents of teens sometimes reminisce about these earlier, simpler times.

Here are 12 of my favourite tips for helping you understand your little one better.

1. Making your baby feel loved is the single most important thing a parent can do.

2. Your child's needs are simple at this stage of development so be sensitive to her cries for hunger, pain, discomfort.

3. All babies cry, and some cry for long periods of time.

4. Don't worry about the old rule that you can spoil a baby by picking it up too much. Respond to their need to be soothed and feel safe.

5. For help calming a new born baby, I highly recommend "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Karp, M.D. Written for parents with babies under 3 months of age.

6. There is a fine line between joy and anger at this stage, so be cautious about over stimulating your baby. Five minutes is a good rule of thumb for 'fun'.

7. Around six months, your baby may begin to develop fears. Loud sounds, new people, animals, or anything unknown may become problematic.

8. Be sensitive to new fears and try to help your baby cope by slowly letting him/her approach these things until he/she is comfortable with them.

9. Talk to you baby as often as you can even if you think he/she can't understand you.

10. Engage in pretend conversations and pause to let you baby have his/her say. You'd be delighted at how your baby's talk has the exact cadence and intonation of English (or your language) even when the sounds don't make sense to anyone.

11. Offer your crawling baby as many textures as possible for sensory stimulation and brain development. Going from carpeting to hardwood to tiles is great.

12 Keep your house warm enough so that your almost walking baby can scrunch little toes on warm floors. Bare feet can grip better than stocking feet and your baby will develop strong foot muscles.

It’s imperative to schedule your baby’s eating and sleeping habits but still be flexible for recreation and personal time.

Finally, scheduling your baby is the fastest and surest way to have your baby sleeping all night long much sooner than later.

The peer pressure on children is less before they get to school full time. Sadly the rest of the abandoned toys sit in the loft gathering dust.

I found a great solution through one of my son’s school friends. He mentioned that he had sold some used toys and games on a website called Jumble World. Jumble world is a great site, an online auction site for used toys and games. You can buy, sell and swap second hand toys from Match Attack Cards to PS2 Games, Barbie dolls to sports stuff.

It is free to join and I was very impressed with the parental controls. The parents control the account with children having sub accounts from the adult. You can also use paypal to process your purchases with the ability to set a limit for you children.

I think it’s a great alternative to Ebay. Jumbleworld is aimed at children, safe, secure and a breeze to use. My eight year old son found it a great place to buy, sell and even swap his used toys and games. He had great success with buying and selling Match Attack Cards, his current obsession.

So if your children are tired of their Christmas presents already then get them to visit Jumbleworld and get them used to the nature of online auctions for used toys and games.

If you decide to use bumper pads, ensure that these are not soft or bulky, and are properly attached to the sides of the crib. Cut off any extra bits of string that may be dangling inside the crib. Once your baby starts sitting up or trying to stand, it may be safer to remove the bumper pads.

DON'T use rubber sheets

Parents often cover the mattress with a rubber sheet to ensure dryness. However, rubber often tends to irritate baby skin. Instead, buy one of those flannel-lined mattress pads that are specially designed for use with baby bedding.

Starting Your Family - Fun or Frustrating? Six Tips for Making It Happen Sooner

When it comes to sex, no one wants to hear, "Maybe you're doing it wrong." But when you've tossed the birth control in hopes of starting a family and nothing happens after six months of sincere effort, maybe - just maybe - you are doing it wrong. But you'll be happy to know it's not your technique, but your timing that may need some tweaking.

Of course, something physiological may be wrong, but if you are between the ages of 18 and 34 and you and your partner are in good health, doctors say it's usually a simple problem holding up little Eggbert or Eggberta. Let's look at the common problems and how to fix them.

Tip #1: Calculate correctly. More often than not, you're miscalculating your most fertile time of the month. Don't wait until you're ovulating to have sex, says Dr. Steven Goldstein, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NYU School of Medicine in New York City. By then you've missed your window of opportunity. Since sperm can live in your reproductive tract for up to 72 hours, you can significantly improve your chances of conception if you start having sex at least three days before ovulation. Some doctors recommend starting five days before to cover miscalculating by a day or two. Keeping an accurate menstrual calendar will help - ovulation takes place 14 days before you get your period. If you have irregular periods, say between 26 and 29 days, you're probably ovulating somewhere between day 12 and day 15, so start having intercourse from day nine through day sixteen. And please, enjoy every moment! In fact, that's an important tip we'll talk about later.

Tip #2: Use an ovulation predictor kit. These kits work well, but only if you follow the directions carefully. Every kit works a little differently in predicting ovulation.

Tip #3: Use the "body temperature method" correctly. You probably know that a rise in body temperature correlates with ovulation, but if you have sex when your temperature rises (a mistaken myth,)you've already missed your chance. To use body temp for predicting ovulation, keep a daily temperature chart for at least one to two months. Then use that information to determine when your temperature will probably rise the next month, and begin having intercourse several days before that date.

Tip #4: There's no such thing as "too much sex." That's right! Sharon Winer, MD, an obstetrician at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, believes that, "the more times you have intercourse during your ‘window of opportunity,' the more likely you are to get pregnant. Again, just enjoy!

Tip #5: Spontaneous sex is better than scheduled sex. Research has shown that scheduling sex may actually decrease your chances of conception. When you put sex on a schedule, it creates a certain amount of stress, and according to Dr. Goldstein, data shows that "hormones may be affected, and that in turn could influence conception." Take some relaxation training. Stay calm and optimistic. If you think more about making love than making a baby, you eliminate the pressure. In other words, enjoy it!

Tip #6: Try pillow therapy! If you're doing everything right, and you're still not pregnant, doctors recommend pillow therapy. Prop your pelvis up on pillows after sex and lie in bed for at least 20 to 30 minutes. This facilitates the movement of sperm through your reproductive tract. Good luck!

Bonus Tip! Actually this is more of a bogus tip, but just for fun, here are some old wives' tales that supposedly help you influence the sex of your baby (with thanks to Laurie Ramsey:)

For a boy -

Allow your husband to seduce you into sex first.

Be a worrywart.

Dad – drink lots of sodas

Eat red meat and salty snacks (such as pretzels.)

Have intercourse at night.

Have intercourse on the odd days of the month.

Have "standing" intercourse.

Have intercourse when there is a quarter moon.

Have intercourse with you on your belly and your husband on your back.

Sleep to the left of your husband.

Make sure your husband climaxes first.

Point your head to the north while having intercourse.

Stay on your back after intercourse to give the "boy" sperm a chance to get to the egg.

Warm up his testicles.

For a girl -

Both of you should eat fish and vegetables.

Eat chocolate

Have intercourse during a full moon.

Have intercourse in the afternoon.

Have intercourse with the man on top. (Another wives' tale says for the woman to be on top)

Seduce your husband.

Stay calm and cool to conceive a girl.

You climax first and think pink.

Well, these pointers must have worked for a few old wives. Some of them, like eating salty snacks or chocolate, are definitely worth a try! Instill responsible thinking and precaution in your child. Your goal is to keep your child safe when he or she becomes sexually active. Describe the risks, responsibilities and your own personal values with regard to sexual behavior so your child will behave responsibly and later on have a healthy sexual life.

One of our local groups, can use just about anything, from books to children’s toys, baby clothing, furniture and things like maternity wear that some of their clients simply can’t afford.

In contrast, if another author’s other books contain only realistic actions, predictions of fantastic events are less reasonable.

• The type of story. We know that certain types of stories follow certain patterns. In mysteries, the detectives collect clues and then usually solve the mystery at the end of the book.

• Knowledge of similar books. Children can recognize similarities between different books. For example, Asian countries have many stories about the mousedeer, a small creature who outwits larger adversaries. Thus, if children have already been exposed to one or two other mousedeer stories, when they see one that begins with a mousedeer being hunted by a crocodile, they might surmise that the mousedeer will find some way to outthink the crocodile.

• Real world knowledge. This is often the best source of clues. In a book about elephants, children can use their knowledge about these animals to make reasonable predictions.

• Previous parts of the book. Children need to use information from earlier parts of a story to predict what will happen in later parts. Many children's books, known as predictable books, make this easier by repeating certain patterns many times.

In addition to developing children's skills at logical thinking, prediction has other advantages. First, it encourages children to listen carefully. Second, prediction heightens children's interest in the book, because after making their prediction, they are keen to find out what the authors decided to have happen next in their book.

You can start to read aloud to your kids at ANY age. It's fun for the kids and dad. It really is a dad duty!

Despite billions of dollars spent on research worldwide, medical science is still unclear about the origins of eczema. Typically, this skin condition is the result of an external substance which causes the problem. Often with baby eczema, the condition results in a rash that gets increasingly worse if not treated until the skin becomes cracked. In babies, the disorder unfortunately affects between ten and twenty percent of all infants in the United States.

Despite the problems it causes the child and parents, this is only a problem for a couple of years as it has normally disappeared before the child reaches two. Unfortunately in a few children do not get over this problem and continue to suffer with it when they are adults. Although this skin disorder can affect someone at any stage in their life, it is most prevalent in infants. Although statistics vary, almost all sufferers will have experienced bouts of this condition since their fifth birthday but almost one third before they were a year old.

Atopic eczema is the type most often found in baby eczema, where the child suffers with an itchy rash that is more often located on the arms, legs, face and head. Whilst atopic eczema is often found in family groups, a child can often have this condition flare up when their skin has not been kept moisturized. Washing powder is also known to trigger attacks but fabric conditioners can also have a similar effect. Some medical research into baby eczema has found a link to mothers who cease breastfeeding their baby's early so continuing this practice for a longer period may help ease the condition.

Some instances of this skin complaint have also been linked to a variety of medical problems which seem to trigger the inflammation. It has also been found that if the baby's mother has asthma, they are more prone to suffer with this condition but other contributing elements include food allergies and allergic rhinitis. Specialists in food allergies believe that up to 3 cases in ten of childhood cases are because the child has a food allergy; once the foodstuff causing the problem is discovered, it is just a simple matter of taking out of the child's meals. Although the process of diagnosing which food is responsible is often a case of trial an error, there are some that are often found as the cause including:

Fish
Cream and other milk products
Foods containing wheat
Eggs
Meals or foodstuffs where peanuts have been used in the preparation

Mothers can also have children that suffer with baby eczema when the infant receives antibiotics soon after birth. Infants, in particular babies with the condition need to be washed gently in lukewarm water using proprietary lubricating creams. Once out of the bath they need to be dried off carefully and then clothed in a soft natural cotton fabric which should prevent irritation. Baby's often scratch themselves so keeping their nails short is the way to prevent inflamed skin becoming infected from scratching. For infants with more serious baby eczema, antihistamine cream may be prescribed which should help stop the itching; the application of a steroid cream for a limited time to help heal the skin quicker may also be used. One thing is certain; this skin disorder is very common, yet remains a difficult form to control and fully overcome.

Parents promise themselves to give the best to their children. Start introducing these words to him/her. Always say the word out loud while signing it. For example when you are giving your baby milk, say the word out loud as you are signing it. But keep using the ones which your baby already knows.

It may take a while for the baby to respond to the signs depending on his/her age. Do not get discouraged about this; just keep on signing to your baby. Eventually your baby will start to respond. An important fact to keep in mind is that your baby will not be able to perform the gestures fluently as you are able to do it. Your baby will adapt some hand shapes and movement of signs depending on his/her hand/eye coordination. Keep signing to your baby in the correct way and as he/she matures and develops the skills, the signing would be more precise.

Sound and sight delight newborns. Their sense of smell is acute and hence they identify so well with their care giver. This is when stimulation is high to touch, seeing and hearing and this is our best chance to slowly expose the child to life’s pleasures. It is a very surprising fact, that children have sound logics. Many times they identify items by way of colour, shape and size. The smile and the twinkle in the eye on seeing a colourful object is their way of recognizing things and a sure reason to mark a milestone.

When we buy a rattle for a child, they are intrigued by the colour and sound of it. Flying objects like a silly cloth hanging on the clothesline attracts their attention and they are often found squealing at the curtain or moving colourful items. Once the motor skills are achieved, probably by the age of two, it is the best time to introduce them to the colourful world.

Invest in a good clay set for starters and let them play with the same. Make a snail and snake and they will love/imitate the same. Appreciate surely. Teach them the basic colour like red, blue, green, yellow, white and black. Buy a thick crayon stick and let them hold the same for an entire day. Anything novel is a fancy item. Slowly introduce the paper and let them do what they want with it.

The next week is exciting for both of you. Give them a crayon and demonstrate how to hold the same. Take a paper and scribble, doodle or draw a huge circle. They sure are amazed at the wonder. Encourage them to mimic the activity. Many kids may not be particularly fond of your colouring themes and for starters they may shred the paper or want to break the crayon. Make a garden, a mountain, river with boats, fishes and a wide mouthed crocodile. Draw a star, sing a rhyme on astronomy and let your child colour all the pictures. Clap hard and praise well ignoring the mess. Draw an edge for them near the outline and tell them to color the hair in black, brown or golden. They will slowly become independent and present you a coloured picture for approval.

Outline alphabets, balls, houses, blocks and get them to know about magenta, turquoise and ash blue. Mix colours for them. Teach them to count and recognize words but end the revisions with colouring.

The best time to make wise use of colors is during festivals. Halloween coloring pages and pumpkin carving using pumpkin stencils is the best way to enter the world of colors. Children can also learn cake decorating ideas, painting ideas and other coloring ways by exploring their creativity and thoughts.

More and more MySpace users are discovering how to pimp their pages by embedding videos from MySpace into the mix of text and graphics that makes a profile come to life. These videos can also be embedded into your MySpace blog, or even left as comments for your friends! YouTube and MySpace seem to play really well together – the two of them are truly a winning combination.

Many people are confused as to how to use YouTube videos on MySpace. It’s really quite easy! Once you have done it a couple of times, it will seem as if you have been doing it forever. Then, you can have fun browsing through MySpace and choosing videos that go with your blog posting, videos that can stand alone as a comment, or videos that will live on your profile page and make a statement about you and your likes and dislikes.

Now, I’m sure you want to know just how to get that elusive YouTube video onto your MySpace, right?

• Go to YouTube and select the video that you want to use. This could take a few minutes or a few hours, depending on you.

• Look in the “About This Video” section and you will see the Embed code. It is beneath the URL box. Click on this code and choose “Copy” to copy the code to your clipboard.

• Let’s place this video in a blog post. Here’s how! Log into your MySpace page and find the link to your blog in the box that has your picture on it. When you are at your blog, find the link that says “Post New Blog”.

This shows that every reader reacts differently to the same book. Children's reactions provide a wonderful window onto their minds.

When children make comments, dads may want to put the book aside for a bit and journey down this new path where the children have pointed. Then, they can return to the book with phrases such as:

a. Let's see what happens next

b. On the next page, …

c. Now …

d. Getting back to the story, …

e. OK, let's continue

Dads can also use gestures, such as putting a finger across their lips, looking down at the book, or point to where in the book they are going to begin to read again.

Children's questions

Dads want to encourage children to ask questions and to welcome their questions when they are asked. Children's questions can be on something that they do not understand, or questions can be on something the children want to know more about. Sometimes, the questions will have nothing to do with the book. Those are okay too, sometimes. Children's questions tell us a good deal about what they know and how they view the world.

Of course, dads will not always be able to answer children's questions. No worries. It is fine to admit that they do not know. This provides us an opportunity to talk about how to find out. For instance, dads and the children can go to the library to look for answers in encyclopedias or in other books, or look at online resources. In this way, children's questions become great motivators for additional reading and for teaching information search skills.

I often wonder if little kids are so fascinated with the discovery of themselves that they have to share all their incredible information with the world. Perhaps because subjects are so openly discussed at home, children feel that it's alright to discuss private affairs in public. Whatever the reason, kids often say the funniest things, and what they say usually involves body functions.

Because they're darling innocents, that's why. The world hasn't taught them yet that such conversation with total strangers isn't socially appropriate. If Mommy is concerned about a rash on a toddler's pee-pee, why can't that concern be related to the postman, the grocery store clerk, or the neighbors? Little kids just don't comprehend the censorship that our society will eventually inflict upon them. If it can be said at home, why can't it be said in public? Again, toddlers have no concept of personal privacy; just ask any frazzled mother whose child just has to go "number two" right this minute! Or so the child agonizingly informs everyone in the checkout lane at Wal-Mart.

If you have ever been in one of these situations, then you will be able to sympathize with the following real life stories. And if you are a parent with children too young to speak yet, just you wait, your time will come!

"I was breast feeding my little girl when the doorbell rang. I covered up quickly and answered the door with my child still in my arms. To my dismay, there were two young, very polite young men; Mormon missionaries they were! My daughter, who's a very friendly child, pulled aside my shirt and gleefully announced 'See Mommy's boobies!' I'll never forget the look on those nice young fellas' faces. I was so embarrassed; I excused myself and shut the door. Glaring at my daughter, who looked at me with wide, innocent eyes, I started to laugh. And every time I tell this story, I still laugh!"

"I took my four-year-old son to the hardware store with me," one red-faced father recounted. "I thought it was time to introduce him to the world of tools, like big kids. Together, we picked out a new hammer and screwdriver, and some brackets I needed to hang our new drapes. At the counter, the elderly owner of the store rang up my purchases. About this time, my son announces at the top of his lungs, 'Daddy's tool is a lot bigger than mine, but he says mine's gonna grow a lot.' The old gentleman never batted an eye. He just said 'I sure hope so, sonny.'

"It was Christmas," said the mother of an adorable three-year-old daughter. "Of course all we were hearing were Christmas carols. My daughter was just learning about God and Jesus and what Christmas is really all about. When "Silent Night" came on the radio, my daughter turned to me and asked 'Mommy, what's a virgin?' I thought about it for a moment - how to explain virginity to a little girl? Finally, I said 'A virgin is a young unmarried woman.' 'Oh,' said my daughter with wisdom beyond her years, 'then my cousin CeCe is a virgin cause she's only sixteen.' From behind the newspaper, my husband snickered and said, 'I wouldn't count on it.' From then on, every time I saw CeCe I couldn't help laughing."

"Out of the mouth of babes…" Nothing could be truer. Children will speak their minds, regardless of the social circumstances around them. You spend several months coaxing those first words from your baby and then spend the next couple of years telling them to be quiet or not to say that. You can't win, so the next best thing you can do is laugh and enjoy your children's' faux pas. Don't try to tell your toddler to hush; that tactic won't work and may even make the situation worse. You'll get a never-ending string of "Why"? One day, when your toddler is grown and bringing home that one true love to meet the family, you can be sure that their significant other will want to hear stories and anecdotes about the sparkle in their life. Then you can regale them and entertain with tales of a certain chatty toddler in the line at Wal-Mart.

It’s pretty common when you are starting to prepare your preschool child for that first day of kindergarten for her to ask you, probably with tears in her eyes, “But Daddy, why do I have to go?” And while you have your parent answers to give her and you will obviously refocus her attention on how fun it will be and how it will be her next step toward “being a big girl”, you might ask yourself that question as well. It’s important that dad and mom have a firm idea of what kindergarten is all about as well so you can do a good job of preparing your little one for this big step in life.

It is a mistake to see kindergarten as a huge academic leap into the future. When parents pour so much energy into preparing their children to excel academically before heading off to kindergarten, they miss the point of this important year of school. Moreover, by “prepping” the child for school as though this first year was going to be their freshman year at MIT, you create even more stress and anxiety because the child begins to think they are going to walk into a situation of high stress. The result is the child goes off to kindergarten already stressed and far more anxious than is justified for this first step out of the home.

Now this does not mean that preschool is not a good idea. Not only does preschool give the child an early love of learning, it is also an excellent way to help your child begin to acclimate to the idea of going to school out of the home. And learning to go somewhere else and become part of an organized curriculum is a big purpose of kindergarten. So preschool gently starts that transition both academically and emotionally.

To a very large extent, the purpose of kindergarten is to help young children begin that transition to a structured environment of school. If by the end of this important first year, kindergarten children come to school happily, know how to work with a schedule, sit at desks, listen to speakers, write things down and take them home and then bring them back again the next day and walk through the structured schedule of a normal school day, that is a huge step forward in preparing your child for school life that will begin in first grade.

Yes there is a curriculum in kindergarten and simple lessons are taught. Very often grades are not even kept or a child is given a good or passing grade just for being in class, participating in the group activity and trying to work with the program. The learning objectives that any kindergarten teacher will have for this year of life with these first year students is heavily slanted toward behavioral and social goals and not as heavy on academics.

The kindergarten teacher is a much different kind of teacher than any others your child will meet in his or her academic career. You will find your child’s kindergarten teacher to be very interested in each child as an individual and in helping your child make that transition away from living at home every hour of the day and toward using a significant part of their day at school. Commonly kindergarten teachers have special training in child psychology and are as much counselors and guides as they are teachers of lessons from books.

Get to know the teacher of your child’s kindergarten class. You will find she is eager to know all she can about your child to achieve her goal of preparing each kindergartner for the more academic years ahead. And if you are in sync with those goals, you can reinforce the experience your child is having with encouragement and interest at home. And working as a team, you and the teacher will help your child have a wonderful and successful first year in school.
